Covad Buys NextWeb

Covad buys NextWeb to add wireless to the catalogue. WiMax to the rescue to get around that last mile monopoliy from the Tele-Barons. It gives NextWeb access to a "nation-wide" footprint telco to backhaul the APs. Covad & Nextweb will be at ISPCON on Oct. 18-20. This follows EarthLink winning the bidding in Philadelphia to build and operate the city-wide Wi-Fi network, which I think will be a huge move for a company that has never been a network operator before (network user and buyer, sure). "The acquisition gives Covad entry into the fixed wireless arena and expands its service footprint. The provider also says wireless reduces its direct recurring costs per customer for an equivalent wireline T1 by up to 60%; and reduces dependence on copper and the regulatory environment."

Last I checked, the FCC still regulated wireless, so you aren't out from under their thumb yet, guys.
