FCC office of Homeland Seurity

The written statement of Ken Moran, Director, Office of Homeland Security, Enforcement Bureau, FCC, hearing ensuring on Ensuring Operability During Catastrophic Events before the Committee on Homeland Security, Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Science, and Technology, United States House of Representatives by Testimony.

"As a result of the communications breakdown, it was extremely difficult for hundreds of thousands of people to receive news and emergency information and to communicate with their loved ones. Emergency workers and public safety officials had difficulty coordinating. It was at times like these that we were reminded of the importance of being able to communicate. While no communications network could be expected to remain fully operational in the face of a direct hit from a category four or five hurricane, that fact was little consolation to the people on the ground."

Well, consolidate the communications structure some more, please. That will certainly ensure that the networks remain operational, since, as we know, Mississippi is taking BellSouth to the PSC over its lack of recovery effort. Bay St. Louis was all but wiped from the map, but thanks to many indie operators, now has a wireless infrastructure in place. (Thanks, Mac!) Just one more example of the FCC playing to the Tele-Barons. (I'll say it again: It might be time to save taxpayer money and abolish the FCC).
