Dark Fiber

"IGI Consulting (IGIC), an independent telecom consulting firm, is working with business prospectors Amesbury Consulting to locate dark fiber facilities throughout the United States, a service for carriers and other companies. Amesbury Consulting has helped a number of companies – including real estate developers, building owners and systems integrators – find dark fiber in cities throughout the country. Amesbury and IGIC said the service will save clients time and money when identifying dark fiber locations. "

Our Public Utility District is considering selling dark fiber. We curently sell lit fiber. Some feel we should only offer lit fiber, even though we have dark fiber available to sell because we will make more money on lit and have more control. We have some data centers and server farm industries that are considering locating here and they require dark fiber. As I said, we have dark fiber available. What is your take on this? It is such a new technology that there is not clear understanding. Is there a consultant out there we could hire to instruct the PUD on how to sell dark fiber and do it right? Or is there another PUD in the US that is currently selling dark fiber and successful with it?

IGI, Ionary or myself could speak with your PUD about lit versus dark fiber.

Selling lit fiber has CAPEX and OPEX (capital and operating expenses). Dark fiber only has limited OPEX, which is usually covered in the IRU (Indefeasible Right of Use) agreement.

Thank you for getting back to me. I will follow up with one of our commissioners. Do you know of a PUD that is currently selling dark fiber and if it is successful?

Idaho Power Company, PG&E, Glasgow Electric in KY, Public Service Electric & Gas in NJ and City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) -- all have mentioned leasing dark fiber or conduits.
